Flavor in the Era of the Lhc (Hardcover)

Flavor in the Era of the Lhc (Hardcover)

$104.99

The series Advances in the Physics of Particles and Nuclei (APPN) is devoted to the archiving, in printed high-quality book format, of the comprehensive, long shelf-life reviews published in The European Physical Journal A and C. APPN will be of benefit in particular to those librarians and research groups, who have chosen to have only electronic access to these journals. Occasionally, original material in review format and refereed by the series` editorial board will also be included. The three reviews collected in this volume summarize and document the outcome of the year long work by the CERN working groups studying the role of flavor physics in the era of the LHC. They confirm that flavor physics is an essential element in the future of high-energy physics. Should new-physics particles be produced at the LHC, studies of flavor physics will play a key role, helping to find the underlying new-physics scenario, to study the properties of new-physics particles and to detect or to exclude new sources of CP violation and flavor structures.

A New Era of Corruption

A New Era of Corruption

$15.98

Europe (especially the Scandinavian countries) has been dominating death metal for so long that if an American death metal band didn’t emerge until the 2000s, one cannot help but wonder if there is going to be some type of European influence. Knoxville, TN’s Whitechapel have been around since 2006, and the sound they bring to A New Era of Corruption does, in fact, have some European metal influences — and yet, Whitechapel never sound like they are going out of their way to emulate European bands. No, this is a death metal album with a bi-continental perspective; in other words, Whitechapel have both North American and European influences and cannot be pigeonholed as strictly American-sounding or strictly European-sounding. This 2010 recording is death metal with elements of technical metalcore; grindcore is an influence, and there are occasional hints of black metal. Indeed, a band that has all of those influences is clearly looking to more than one continent for artistic inspiration, which is a good thing because A New Era of Corruption is fairly unpredictable. There are plenty of twists and turns on this 41-minute CD; tempo changes are frequent, and vocal styles vary. Lead singer Phil Bozeman embraces a death metal Cookie Monster growl more often than not, but that doesn’t prevent him from making some detours into metalcore screaming or a black metal-ish rasp. Occasionally, A New Era of Corruption ends up sounding unfocused and confused, although that isn’t a huge problem — and when all is said and done, Whitechapel end up with a mildly uneven album that isn’t perfect but has more pluses than minuses. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Total Joke Era

Total Joke Era

$11.98

The Bark Haze is an experimental guitar duo comprised of Andrew MacGregor (who records under the name Gown) and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth). Total Joke Era is actually two different albums: the limited-edition LP version and the CD version contain completely different recordings. On the CD, you get two long tracks (the first just over 11 minutes long, the second twenty-four-and-a-half), both recorded live in someone’s basement in Northampton, MA. Neither of these guys is really a noise-for-noise’s-sake kind of guitarist, so while the music here isn’t exactly lyrical, it’s really quite listenable in spots. The first track has some especially lovely sections, particularly near the middle when dubby-sounding chimes float in and out of the sonic mix while a long bass pedal point thrums comfortingly below. The second track starts out very dour and brooding, with sounds like low-flying airplanes and anguished wails crowding each other in the mix. Things mellow out a bit near the middle, then the sound gradually builds in intensity before tapering off again and ending on a mournful (but perhaps hopeful) note. Just goes to show that instrumental prowess really does count for something, even when you’re making noise. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Gown – Guitar; Thurston Moore – Guitar

Jazz Genius: The Flamingo Era

Jazz Genius: The Flamingo Era

$12.79

Released in 2010, Jazz Genius: The Flamingo Era is the ideal sequel to Proper’s Little Giant, which examined saxophonist Tubby Hayes’ recording activity as sideman and leader during the years 1954-1956. Jazz Genius follows his progress from 1956 through 1961, an exciting period during which he enlarged upon the Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie/James Moody influences by continuing to absorb what was in the air while tapping into his own intuitive gifts, branching out from tenor and baritone saxes to demonstrate a developing facility on both vibraphone and flute. Drawn from six different albums, these 41 selections were originally recorded for the Ember label which was operated by Jeff Kruger, owner of the Flamingo Club in Soho. Tracks which were culled from Tubby Hayes and the Jazz Couriers and The Jazz Couriers in Concert are particularly exciting on account of the interaction between Hayes and saxophonist Ronnie Scott. There are excerpts from the Tempo compilation Jazz at the Flamingo, examples of Hayes blowing baritone sax with Tony Crombie & His Men on Columbia, some rather rigidly arranged material produced for TV with the group billed as the London Jazz Quartet, and selections from the album An Evening with Tony Kinsey, recorded just prior to Hayes’ visit to the U.S. in 1961. The immediate aftermath of his arrival would involve collaborations with trumpeter Clark Terry, and by June of 1962, Hayes was in the recording studio with James Moody and Roland Kirk. This superb compilation is a hefty prologue to those recordings, filling in a vitally important part of the picture, as at long last the legacy of Tubby Hayes is being pieced together and made available worldwide. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
