Reggae Rasta
Reggae Rasta

Do I have to fear having to wear a rasta hat?
I am a big reggae fan, but I do have fears. Can I use a rasta hat without fear? or should I em. i now have a shaved head. black and im-Sri Lanka yes thankz <3
The most important thing is knowing that Rastafari represents origins. If you believe your roots African American to be strong enough in their identity and feel you should show pride in their ancestors break with slavery, then I say that no matter if you have fears or not. That is just one aspect that has become popular, unfortunately, more than in the modern stereotype of America (largely uninformed) society.

The First Rasta $26.82 Going far beyond the standard imagery of Rasta—ganja, reggae, and dreadlocks—this cultural history offers an uncensored vision of a movement with complex roots and the exceptional journey of a man who taught an enslaved people how to be proud and impose their culture on the world. In the 1920s Leonard Percival Howell and the First Rastas had a revelation concerning the divinity of Haile Selassie, king of Ethiopia, that established the vision for the most popular mystical movement of the 20th century, Rastafarianism. Although jailed, ridiculed, and treated as insane, Howell, also known as the Gong, established a Rasta community of 4,500 members, the first agro-industrial enterprise devoted to producing marijuana. In the late 1950s the community was dispersed, disseminating Rasta teachings throughout the ghettos of the island. A young singer named Bob Marley adopted Howell`s message, and through Marley`s visions, reggae made its explosion in the music world. |

False Rasta $11.19 Spring Hill Records is a new reissue label dedicated to uncovering reggae’s most hard edged, over looked & obscure vintage tunes. From tough rockers to piercing digital riddims, Spring Hill digs deeper to offer its unique selection, beautifully mastered, on high quality vinyl. Its debut release is the earth shaking ‘False Rasta’ by Naggo Morris. One of the holy grails of deep steppers roots, the blueprint for the Jah Shaka & Aba Shanti style, this mega rare cut is presented here for the first time since its original release on SG Records in 1982. On the A-side, the discomix morphs the original into a fierce 4×4 heavyweight dub belter. Flip to the B-side for a special dubplate mix condensing the vocal and the dub into an extra deadly sound system weapon. Look out for the next release on Spring Hill Records, coming soon! |

Rasta International $13.58 Over the course of more than two decades, bassist Ryan Moore has made a name for himself as perhaps the finest exponent of D.I.Y. dub, a home studio virtuoso whose solo albums under the name Twilight Circus Dub Sound System have provided a regular fix to those who are addicted to vintage, ’70s style instrumental reggae. But since 2000 he has also emerged as a great producer and impresario, bringing reggae singers and deejays new and old into the studio and creating powerful rhythms over which some have done their best work in decades. Rasta International offers a fine assortment of tracks in that vein, featuring such singers as Fred Locks (remember him?) and Luciano, and deejay talents like Admiral Tibet and Ranking Joe. As Twilight Sound System, this shifting array of singers and chatters has traveled around the world with Moore’s support, and this disc gives an idea of what an evening of the sound might feel like. Just about everything varies in quality from good (Fred Locks’ “Wisdom,” Luciano’s subdued and slightly disappointing “Spiritual Friend”) to spectacular (Admiral Tibet’s joyfully sharp “Stand Up and Fight,” Lutan Fyah’s funky “We Can Make It Work”). The rhythms are dark and dense, with that wonderful Lee Perry-meets-King Tubby vibe for which Moore is famous. Very highly recommended to all roots reggae lovers. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi |

The Fathers of Reggae $17.98 For a U.K.-based group that spent their entire tenure paying homage to the great singers and songwriters of the Island Nation (Jamaica), the oft-scoffed-at UB40 pull off something of a coup with this unique reggae compilation. While most laypeople would only recognize UB40 from their early-’80s crossover mega-hit “Red Red Wine” and their numerous reggae covers of popular songs (Al Green’s “Here I Am,” Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”), the group affirms their respect among the reggae community with this veritable who’s who of the genre. With a track list culled from UB40′s personal favorites and a slew of legendary toasters and famed producers (Sly & Robbie, Steely & Clevie, Fatta & Bulby) to treat them, there is good deal of magic here. Rocksteady’s golden age is well-represented by the Mighty Diamonds on the groovily mystical “You Could Meet Somebody” and former Melodians frontman Brent Dowe’s haunting rendition of “Silent Witness.” More irie wisdom is delivered on Jackie Robinson’s delightful “Don’t Do the Crime” and Bob Andy’s “Love Is All Is Alright.” While the pace is slow and the mood is invariably mature, reggae lovers of varying levels of fandom will find much of value in the Fathers of Reggae collection. Not all the offerings are a cut above, including the aging Cool Ruler’s (Gregory Isaacs) version of “Bring Me Your Cup,” the altogether too-synthetic “Higher Ground” (Leroy Sibbles), and the surprisingly unmoving “Watchdogs” (by slack originator turned Rasta legend Max Romeo). However, on the strength of the amazing cache of reggae vocals alone (Toots Hibbert, Alton Ellis, Freddie McGregor, John Holt), this album is a unique work, but considering the occasional spotty songwriting in UB40′s originals, the album doesn’t always reach the lofty heights that the distinguished panel have attained in their storied careers. ~ M.F. DiBella, Rovi Performers: Ali Campbell – Vocals, Guitar; Astro – Vocals; Brian Travers – Saxophone; Earl Falconer – Keyboards, Bass; Jim Brown – Drums; Michael Virtue – Keyboards; Norman Hassan – Vocals, Percussion; Robin Campbell – Guitar, Vocals |
